How does your firm distribute work assignments to summer associates?
The students we invite to join us over the summer will get work assignments similar to what our attorneys are doing in various practice areas, including areas of interest to the applicant. Summer associates benefit from extensive mentoring and feedback on their written work product by assigning attorneys and independent attorney reviewers. Summer associates are also encouraged to attend "spectator events" such as trials and hearings, transactional closings, depositions, mediations, and oral arguments.
We do not operate a formal rotation system. Rather, we strive to ensure that each summer associate receives a variety of assignments for different attorneys, with a focus on those practices in which the summer associate has expressed a particular interest, so that he or she may gain exposure to a variety of practice areas and lawyering styles. Pro bono work is also a component of our summer program.
Each summer associate is evaluated informally after each assignment and receives a formal evaluation halfway through the summer. We also assign mentors to each summer associate, to help him or her make the most of all aspects of the Jennings Strouss summer experience.
What kind of training can I expect to receive?
We work hard to ensure that our attorneys provide immediate and meaningful feedback to summer associates throughout the program. Each summer associate is assigned to a mentor who serves as a guide for the student to navigate through the summer. They are also a valuable resource to answer questions about work-related matters, the firm, and the practice of law.
In which offices do you offer your Summer Program?
Our Summer Program is currently offered in Phoenix, Arizona, where the firm is headquartered. Centralizing the program in our largest office provides summer associates with the opportunity to interact with the greatest number of practice groups and attorneys. Lawyers from other offices come to Phoenix for Summer Program social events and periodically for client and firm business, which allows summer associates the opportunity to interact with professionals and learn more about the firm's other offices.
What types of social activities do the summer associates participate in?
Throughout the summer we host activities that are designed to showcase the cultural offerings of the cities in which we practice. For summer associates who are new to a particular city, these events provide an opportunity to get to know the city's neighborhoods, arts, sports teams, and restaurants. For all of our summer associates, our social and community service programs provide a great way to get to know our attorneys, their families, and their communities.
What are the salaries and benefits of a summer associate working for Jennings Strouss?

Do you Hire 1Ls for your summer program?
No. Our Summer Program focuses on a creating a pipeline of talent for our incoming associate class the following fall.
Do you have a first half and second half program?
No. By inviting only a small handful of law students to participate in our Summer Program we create an intimate work environment that allows for a more personalized and meaningful experience. Committing to a full summer allows the summer associate an opportunity for continuity with their projects.
Will the firm assist me with finding summer housing?
Yes. We have a wealth of resources to draw on and often receive referrals from previous summer associates or new associates who have recently moved to the area. We have negotiated rates with extended stay hotels and regularly work with NALPs apartment exchange program and local Universities who provide housing services.
How is an offer made?
Offers for employment are typically made soon after the Summer Program ends and usually before the Labor Day holiday. Summer associate work product is reviewed and feedback is solicited from attorneys and staff on the associates attitude, teamwork and integration into the firm while here.
