The lecture is titled: Deception and Misperception On and Off the Magic Stage (free). Now you see it, and now you don't. Or do you? Stephen Macknik, Ph.D., of the Barrow Neurological Institute, will discuss how magic and illusions relate to misperceptions not just on stage where there isa willing suspension of disbelief, but also in crime, fraud, the legal system and the paranormal. Dr. Macknik is a laboratory director at the Barrow Neurological Institute, where he studies various aspects of visual, sensory, and cognitive neuroscience. Look for Dr. Macknik's new book Sleights of Mind, co-authored by Susana Martinez-Conde and Sandra Blakeslee, on the topic of neuromagic due out in the fall of 2010.

The lecture is titled: Antibiotic Resistance: What Happens When the Drugs Can't Kill the Bugs?(free) Join guest Shelley Haydel, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, School of Life Science and the Center for Infectious Disease and Vaccinology at The Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University as she discusses how the development of antimicrobials represent one of the most significant medical successes of the 20th century. Although antibiotics have saved millions of lives, infectious bacteria have evolved to protect themselves and resist killing, thus making some infections difficult or impossible to treat. This lecture will center around Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) as an example to discuss bacterial antibiotic resistance, why the problem exists and what happens when infections caused by resistant bacteria fail to respond to our most effective and commonly used antibiotics.

Over 500 community members and leaders will attend the dinner as Teach For America celebrates the impact of corps members and alumni, and thanks Phoenix community members who make thier work possible.

Funds raised at the event will enable the continued growth and increase the Teach For America corps size in Metro-Phoenix for the fall of 2010.

Jennings Strouss is proud to sponsor the Arizona Science Center's Galaxy Gala 2010: Time Machine. Galaxy Gala is expected to draw an esitmated 700 people and proceeds will benefit the Center's educational programs and offerings.

Last year's event raised more than $305,000 for the Science Center's programs, including the Free School Admissions program for at-risk youth, and the Science on Wheels science outreach program.

Join guest Mark Robinson, Professor at the School of Earth & Space Exploration at Arizona State University as he delves into the historic Apollo mission and shares details from the NASA-funded project at ASU to scan thousands of photographs from the historic mission and convert them into digital images. The historical photos, coupled with the new ones, will help NASA pick safe landing sites for future missions. Robinson will answer questions about the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC), for which he is the principle investigator.

3/25/2010 - Commercializing Life Sciences Forum: Accelerating a Concept into a Bioscience Company

Jennings Strouss is again partnering with ASU Technopolis and other entities to co-sponsor the 6th Annual Commercializing Life Sciences Forum ("Conference") on March 25, 2010 in Scottsdale, Arizona at ASU's Skysong campus. This year's Conference, entitled Accelerating Concept Into A Bioscience Company, will address some of the ways these bioscience companies and researchers can confront these challenges and accelerate the commercialization of these inventions into market-ready diagnostic or therapeutic products.

The Conference will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 25^th, at ASU-SkySong in Scottsdale, AZ. Information on the conference is below and on the enclosed postcard. Here is a summary of the Conference highlights:

3/6/2010 - Jennings Strouss Sponsors Via Colori: Glendale Street Painting Festival

Via Colori, The Street Painting Festival, is an upscale signature special event which raises funds for not-for-profit organizations throughout the United States.

Via Colori brings together artists, volunteers and businesses with non-profit agencies in a unique community project to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars each year for important social causes.

Street painting was first recorded in the 16th Century when itinerant artists would paint religious icons on the courtyards of the great Italian cathedrals. They would leave their chalk boxes open, in hopes that the pilgrims would show their appreciation for the work by leaving some coins. Because the images these artists would paint were often of the Madonna, they became known as Madonnari.

Street painting languished until about 30-years ago when festivals began to spring up in Europe, mostly in Italy. In 1986, the first American festival began in Santa Barbara, California. It was named I Madonnari after the first street painters, and today it still boasts some of the most beautiful works found in festivals anywhere.

Ron G. King, Ph.D., Program Co-Chair, is Vice President of New Ventures and Commercialization at TGen. Previously, he was the Associate Director for the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health.

Title: Ecogenomic sensors for understanding human health and the environment, Dr. Dierdre Meldrum, Dean of the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering

Summary: Studying different types of microbes that have adapted to survive in different, often extreme, conditions provides information about biogeochemical cycles, metabolic capabilities, and the complex interactions that affect the health of our planet. In addition, it increases our understanding of cellular biology, which enables us to develop links between genomics, cell function (or dysfunction) and disease. Understanding these interrelationships will aid in the development of diagnostic tools to measure the health status across all dimensions of human health, from defects in single cells to alterations in the normal function of tissues and organs. Title: Neurorehabilitation for Stroke Survivors...Where We Have Been and Where We Are Going

Dr. Steven L. Wolf is a professor at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA. There are multiple efforts to improve the functional outcomes among individuals who have sustained strokes. These initiatives are important because after cancer and heart disease, stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States. With these facts in mind, considerable effort has been directed toward novel interventions designed to improve upper extremity functional capability amongst stroke survivors. This talk highlights some of the present efforts and directs attention toward future initiatives. Several of these directives include the development or modification of existing biotechnology. An overview of some approaches as well as speculation about the extent to which future initiatives mandated by progressively changing health care policy will impact the role of caregivers and the utilization of emerging technologies will be provided.

Companies from all industry sectors are increasingly spending millions of dollars procuring new software and other technology from high tech companies. These high tech companies usually only give a license to the user of the technology and the license normally places significant limits on the scope of that use.

This seminar will help executives from both the high tech company (the licensor) and the company using the software or other technology (the licensee) better understand the key issues associated with these licensing transactions.

In addition, both the licensor and the licensee are increasingly trying to determine the appropriate way to place a monetary value on the technology in question. These valuations are important not only for licensing transactions, but also for purposes of obtaining financing and for corporate valuations. This seminar will help attendees learn how technology should be appropriately valued for these varying business purposes.

10/20/2005 - American Bar Association 28th Annual Forum on Franchising / Grande Lakes Resort, Orlando, Florida

The Franchising Forum will have 55 presentations over the course of three days on very diverse subjects.

Carolyn J. Johnsen of Jennings Strouss, and Sarah B. Foster will present a workshop called: "Franchisor Bankruptcy: Opportunities, Risks and Impacts On a Franchise System."

In recent years, some prominent franchisors have files for protection under federal bankruptcy law. This program will address the reasons why bankruptcy may be an effective remedy in specific situations and the process for planning for a franchisor Chapter 11 filing. The program will also provide an overview of relevant bankruptcy procedures, primarily in the context of a reorganization. In addition, the panel will discuss franchisee rights in a franchisor bankruptcy, both during and after the reorganziation process.
