Mr. Curci is Chair of the firm's Biotechnology & Life Sciences Industry Group and the firm's Intellectual Property Department. He represents clients in domestic and international intellectual property and technology matters, including patent/technology licensing, technology/research collaborations and consortia, technology commercialization matters, and the overall use and protection of intellectual property rights. He advises clients in many industry sectors, including life sciences research institutions, bioscience industry companies, universities, foundations, semiconductor-industry companies, software companies, and other technology industry companies.

In particular, he counsels universities/research institutions, their foundations, and bioscience companies concerning technology licenses, research collaborations, sponsored research, other multi-party collaborations, material transfers, clinical trial agreements, other technology commercialization matters, and the formation of spin outs/accelerators. He has earned a national reputation representing technology companies and other entities in their participation in technology standards initiatives and other multi-party technology collaborations and consortia.

Since 1996, Mr. Curci has been an Adjunct Professor of Law teaching intellectual property law courses at California, Oregon and Arizona law schools. He is currently an Adjunct Professor at the Sandra Day O'Connor School of Law at Arizona State University, teaching ‘High Technology Licensing.' Previously, he taught at the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, California, and at Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon, where he taught 'International Intellectual Property Law' and other intellectual property courses. Mr. Curci was a visiting attorney at a Tokyo, Japan law firm in the early 1990s and his practice has had an international component since that time. He writes and lectures on domestic and international intellectual property and technology issues relevant to the bioscience and technology industries.

Biotechnology & Life Sciences

Mr. Curci represents bioscience industry companies, life sciences research institutions, and research universities concerning a number of research, licensing, other intellectual property matters, and other business matters.

  • Represents life sciences research institutions (including a nationally-recognized genomics research institute and the technology transfer division of a California/Arizona hospital system) concerning patent/technology licensing, sponsored research, research collaborations, other multi-party life sciences coalitions, other technology commercialization matters, IP policy matters, grant agreements, clinical trial agreements, material transfers, and the formation of, and/or equity investments in, startup bioscience entities
  • Represents bioscience companies concerning patent/other technology licensing, collaborative research arrangements, sponsored research, clinical trial agreements, material transfers, and other technology/IP matters
  • Represents a bioscience accelerator company in its early stage investments in bioscience companies and other intellectual property and business matters

High Technology & General Intellectual Property

Mr. Curci represents companies in several sectors of the technology industry concerning domestic and international intellectual property and technology matters, including the following:

  • Patent and other technology licensing
  • Collaborative development of technology and other multi-party collaborative technology efforts
  • Procurement of IP rights from technology developers; technology distribution arrangements (reseller/OEM); open source software issues; Internet-electronic commerce issues (including ASPs); product manufacturing agreements, and other technology acquisitions and transfers
  • Represents leading technology companies (including a major electronic design automation (EDA) company, and the USA subsidiary of a Japanese high tech company) and a global credit card company concerning the creation and structuring of global technology standards and other multi-party collaborative consortia ("Technology Consortia"). Counsels these entities concerning the Patent/Intellectual Property Rights Policies, cross-licensing of patents and strategic technology contributions to the Technology Consortia
  • Overall use and protection of intellectual property rights

International Transactions

Represents clients in transnational business, intellectual property, and technology matters. In the early 1990s he was a visiting American attorney in a Tokyo, Japan, law firm and his practice has had an international component since that time.

General Commercial Law

Represents clients in various commercial, corporate and finance transactions, including acquisitions, creation of spin outs/accelerators, equity and debt investments in startup entities, and the other business transactions described above.
